To be rational...
To be rational, what even is that? Using logic/science rather then emotions or superstition or religion perhaps? Facts that can be shown and known rather then myth or lore. Poems have there place, and this isn't it.
So does one have to discard beliefs in full to be rational? Well, if that belief isn't rational .... how do you know what is or isn't rational? AH there is the trick. For me, it was learning INFORMAL LOGIC that enabled me to think in a new way that made understanding reality way different then before.
But I dont know if that will work for anyone else! Still, it can't hurt to try.
So... learn informal logic! :)
A lot of people misunderstand “being rational” as becoming emotionless or rejecting everything meaningful, when in reality it’s about using reliable tools (logic, evidence, and critical thinking) to decide which beliefs deserve our confidence and how strongly they deserve it. You’re right about informal logic. Learning to recognize fallacies, hidden assumptions, and bad reasoning patterns fundamentally changes how you see arguments, media, religion, politics; pretty much everything. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it. I’d argue that rationality is less about what conclusions you hold and more about how you arrive at them and whether you’re willing to revise them when better information comes along. If more people were taught informal logic early, the world would look very different. Great contribution. 👍
